The Professional Staff Union is a local of the Massachusetts Teachers Association. Our bargaining unit is made up of professional staff employees from UMass Amherst and UMass Boston. Each campus is organized as a chapter. The two chapters comprise the local.
The governing body overseeing the local is called the Joint Executive Council (JEC). The JEC is the overall governing body of the PSU/MTA/NEA. It has jurisdiction over those matters that affect the entire local and cannot be decided at the chapter level. The JEC has representatives from both the Boston and Amherst chapters.
Each chapter has its own by-laws and governance bodies. In Boston, the body that oversees union activities and contract enforcement is called the Chapter Board. The Chapter Board is elected by the bargaining unit members at Boston.
At Boston, we are also working to develop "Area Reps." Area Reps will be the "face of the union" in different work areas on campus.
